Proper Nutrition

Let's begin with the most important meal of the day for ADD/ADHD adults/children; breakfast. You want to give them food that enhances their brain’s performance, and avoid food that makes their brain foggy or sleepy. For breakfast they should eat 60% to 70% Protein and 30% to 40% Complex Carbohydrates. These types of carbohydrates are easily processed into energy. Protein helps to stabilize their blood sugar. A child or adult that skips breakfast will have difficulty remembering and a shorter attention span.

What you should eliminate from your Diet:

  1. No Dairy products (produces mucus)
  2. No Fried food (metabolizes into toxins)
  3. No Processed foods (Stay away from Nitrites, chemicals you can’t pronounce)
  4. No Sodas (highly acidic)
  5. Cut Sugar intake by 90% (Stay away from High Fructose Corn Syrup)
  6. No MSG (excites neurons to death)
  7. No Artificial colors (usually made from petroleum)
  8. No Junk food (If it comes in a wrapper, don’t eat it!)
  9. No Artificial sweeteners (Try a natural sweetener Stevia)
  10. No Trans Fat (Partially Hydrogenated oils) and No Hydrogenated oils

You will find that heavy metal toxicity is usually related to poor diet and nutrition. Sometimes children can have mimic symptoms of ADD from heavy metal toxicity. Heavy metals kick out minerals such as calcium, zinc, selenium, magnesium, etc and then replace themselves in your cells. Although ADHD can also have heavy metal toxicity, it is related more to food additives, food allergies, and sucrose. Many parents are surprised by the difference in their child's concentration and temperament by simply raising the vitamin supplement to a higher quality and taking out the chips, sodas, hydrogenated oils, or high fructose corn syrup.

Products like sodas and junk food are very unhealthy for anyone, not just for ADD/ADHD. Soda is very acidic. In order for your stomach to neutralize all this acid, it must pull calcium from your blood, muscles, or bones. Sodas also create an acidic atmosphere lowering the pH in your body. This creates a play ground for yeast, mold, parasites, and disease. Most adults/kids that have ADHD are highly deficient in calcium, zinc, and magnesium already. Can you see how destructive this is when a child comes home from school and will constantly drink sodas?

Simple sugars (refined, unrefined, etc) are released into the blood stream all at once, spiking your insulin, damaging the spleen, and also sticks to your arteries. Simple sugar stimulates a fat-storing enzyme and will convert right into fat. The worst culprit of them all is High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) which is found in most snacks with a wrapper or in a box. It provides a double whammy by shutting off the switch that controls your appetite and then is easily turned into fat. Carbohydrates cause your body to produce insulin. These carbs are burned up for quick energy or stored in the muscles to be used later. But HFSC is different! It doesn't stimulate insulin production. So instead of burning it up for energy, you end up storing it as fat right from the get go! Without insulin, there is not a shut-off switch for your appetite. And we wonder why our children theses days are already over weight. Stick to complex sugars/carbohydrate, which are found naturally in fruit, grains, and vegetables. These sugars are time-released into the bloodstream to provide energy throughout the day.

Milk causes a body imbalance because it is completely unnatural to drink. Cow's milk today is extremely high in fat, cholesterol, hormones, and antibiotics. Years ago, cows produced on average 2000 pounds of milk per year. Now, due to hormones and specialized breeding, that same cow may produce over 50,000 pounds per year. Over 60% of individuals are allergic to dairy or lactose intolerant. The body reacts with sinus congestion, digestive disturbance (bloating), allergies, headaches, poor mental clarity, and low energy. Milk produces mucus in the body, it's kind of like glue. And bacteria THRIVE in mucus! This is why you are told not to drink milk when you are sick. Try drinking organic soy or rice milk instead. Girls/women with thyroid, estrogen, or hormone issues should avoid soy milk and drink rice milk.

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is known as the "slow poison." MSG triples the amount of insulin that the pancreas creates, has been scientifically proven to cause obesity, damages the hypothalamus, it enhances your taste bud by making you want to eat more, and it kills neurons in the brain by exciting them to death. Migraines, autism, ADHD, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and more have been linked to MSG. MSG is sometimes hidden under other names such as: Natural Meat tenderizer, Accent, Hydrolyzed Vegetable/Soy Protein, Aginomoto, Yeast, Autolyzed yeast, Gelatin, Textured protein, Calcium/Sodium caseinate, and Glutamic acid. MSG is used in practically every restaurant and fast food establishment.

Aspartame is used as an artificial sweetener in NutraSweet, Equal, Crystal light, and diet drinks. It over stimulates or excites nerve cells and can cause permanent damage to the nervous system. Side effects are seizures, migraines, depression, insomnia, panic attacks, asthma, tremors, memory loss, and irritability. Chronic use of aspartame can worsen ADD/ADHD, Lupus, Fibromyalgia, Alzheimer's, Lyme disease, and Arthritis. Splenda uses sucralose. Side effects are bloating, burry vision, depression, dizziness, headaches, and frequent urination. Chronic use of sucralose can cause shrunken thymus glands, aborted pregnancy, diarrhea, decrease in red blood cell count, and enlarged liver and kidneys. My recommendation is to use a natural herbal sweetener like Stevia. It comes from a shrub that is native to Paraguay called stevia rebaundiana. It tastes a little like licorice and is sweeter than sucrose. There are no side effects or dangers associated with Stevia. It is the world’s only all natural sweetener with zero calories, zero carbohydrates, zero glycemic index, and aspartame free.

Then there are the fried foods which most of the time are cooked in hydrogenated oils. Fast Food restaurants like to fry with hydrogenated oils because it makes the fries crunchy. It breaks my heart to see these kids/teenagers that eat fries or chicken tenders everyday during or after school. I could write a chapter alone just on how partially hydrogenated oils are the "silent killers" associated with various diseases such as diabetes, autoimmune, heart disease, high cholesterol, etc. Hydrogenated oils are man-made products. They are very toxic. They attach to the liver, spleen, gallbladder, kidneys, artery walls, and intestine. So many times I have had parents say to me, “Well at least it’s only partially hydrogenated.” I have to remind them that partially hydrogenated oils are worse!
